Tsuru-no-Mai Bridge

Tsuruta-machi NATURE

The Tsurunomai Bridge is a 300-meter-long wooden triple drum bridge located in Tsuruta-machi, Aomori Prefecture, and is the longest in Japan.

The bridge was completed in 1994 and is made of Hiba (cypress) grown in Aomori Prefecture. The elegant arches of the bridge were designed to resemble dancing cranes, and in the background is a spectacular view of Mount Iwaki, known as Tsugaru Fuji. The bridge spans the Mawariyan Great Reservoir, called “Tsugaru Fujimi Lake,” and the beautiful scenery on the lake’s surface attracts visitors.

Many people know of this place from the JR commercial featuring actress Yoshinaga Sayuri, and many people take their cameras here, especially at dusk and during the snowy season.

The bridge, designed in the image of a dancing crane, is also a symbol of good fortune. The crane is also a symbol of longevity: As the saying goes, “a crane lives a thousand years, a tortoise lives ten thousand years,” and “long wooden bridge” = “bridge of long life.” Fujimiko Lake Park and Tantouzuru Nature Park are located nearby, making it an ideal area for strolling.
