Osorezan, located in Mutsu City, is one of the three most sacred mountains in Japan.It is said to have been founded in 862 by Jikaku Daishi Ennin of the Tendai sect.

Known as a sacred site where hell and paradise coexist, the desolate volcanic terrain is filled with sulfuric gases and a strong odor, creating a landscape reminiscent of “hell.”

On the other hand, the “Gokuraku-hama” beach on the adjacent Lake Uzori offers beautiful white sand and crystal clear water, symbolizing paradise and a red bridge crosses the Sanzu-no-Kawa River near the entrance to the temple grounds.

Osorezan is also famous for the “Itako” (a shrine maiden), who speaks to the spirits of the dead during the “Osorezan Grand Festival” in July and the “Autumn Pilgrimage” in October, attracting many visitors. On the temple grounds, there are also hot springs to heal worshippers who used to come on foot to visit the temple, and visitors can enjoy bathing at four hot spring bathhouses, including “Hie-no-yu.”
