Lake Towada is a caldera lake straddling Aomori and Akita Prefectures.It is known as the third deepest lake in Japan.

The lake is 46 km in circumference and 327 m deep at its deepest point. It is characterized by its clear and beautiful surface.

As the mountain beauty of Hakkoda, the mountain stream beauty of Oirase, and the lake beauty of Towada are said to be the grand triplet of Aomori, visitors can enjoy the scenery of the four seasons: fresh green in spring, blue sky, and lake surface in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscape in winter. Especially in mid and late October, many tourists visit in fall to gaze at autumn leaves.

Tours of the lake by sightseeing boat are popular, and visitors can enjoy spectacular and mysterious scenery that cannot be seen from the lakeside.

The Towada Shrine and other tourist attractions are located around Lake Towada. Visitors can also enjoy local delicacies such as Kiritanpo (a typical rice cake in Akita) and Hime-masu trout dishes. In winter, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing to view icicles and icefalls and other activities to experience nature to the fullest.

The “Maiden Statue,” a posthumous work by Takamura Kotaro, is a poetic work of art that contrasts with the beauty of the waters of Lake Towada.
