Nakano Momijiyama is one of the most famous places in Japan for autumn foliage.

The autumn foliage of approximately 130 maple trees, each over 100 years old, is a spectacular sight loved by many people every year.

In the Meiji era (1868-1912), an English woman traveler, Isabelle Bird, described it in her “Travels in the Interior of Japan” as “everything is charming here. It was recently ranked first in the “Best View of Autumn Foliage at Night” ranking on Jalan, a popular travel media in Japan.

It is said that Nakano Momijiyama began in 1802 when Prince Tsugaru Yasuchika, the lord of the Hirosaki domain, ordered over 100 varieties of maple seedlings from Kyoto and transplanted them.

Currently, there are about 20 species of maple trees, including “Oomomiji,” “Yama-momiji,” “Uchiwa-momiji,” and “Uchiwa-momiji.

It is said that the more intense the difference in temperature, the brighter the color of the maple tree.

Nakano Shrine, one of the three Tsugaru Fudo shrines, is in the forest.

◆By car: From the Kuroishi IC of the Tohoku Expressway, drive toward Towada. (via Route 102) It takes about 6 km, 10 minutes. *During peak season, using other routes is recommended as it gets very crowded (Ochiai Keuchi Route or Toyooka Onyu Route)

◆By Konan Bus: 31 minutes from Kuroishi Station,

Take Ogwara line and get off at Nakano Jinja-mae bus stop (1 minute walk).
