The Takahashi Family Residence is a historic building with a distinctive presence on Kuroishi’s Nakamachi Komise Street.

It was built over 270 years ago during the Horeki era (1751-1763). It was a merchant house under the Kuroishi Domain’s warrant to deal in rice hulls during the Domain’s rule. In the tasteful building, a hidden room with a moon-viewing window, where vital persons of the clan used to go secretly, a rice warehouse, a miso warehouse, and a document warehouse remain as they were.

Takahashi Yukie, the 14th head of the Takahashi family, runs a coffee shop.

Upon entering, visitors can feel the relaxed and comfortable humidity of the earthen floor of the old Japanese house. On a fine day, tea can be enjoyed in the garden. Traditional crafts such as pigeon flutes, kokeshi dolls, and postcards on display are also a nice touch. Spending time in the courtyard with delicious coffee and green powdered tea made with water from the well, along with handmade Anmitsu (sweet bean paste) and chilled Zenzai (sweet bean jelly), while listening to the quiet sound of the radio as background music, is a most relaxing moment.
