Miyakoshi House Annex/Garden

Nakadomari-machi HISTORY

The Miyakoshi family is an old historical family located in Nakadomari-machi, Aomori Prefecture, and was once known as one of the leading wealthy farmers in the area.

In the Taisho era (1912-1926), the head of the family, Miyakoshi Shoji, built a detached house called “Shimu-an” and a beautiful garden called “Seisen-en” to enjoy poetry, a hobby shared with his wife.

The garden is open to the public only twice a year, in early summer and early fall. (In 2024, it will be open from May 24 to June 30 and from October 4 to November 10.)

The stained glass windows in Shumuan, a symbol of Taisho Romanticism, are the work of Ogawa Sanchi, a pioneer of stained glass in Japan.
Ogawa Sanchi is said to have completed this work by correspondence without visiting the site. However, the work is highly acclaimed for its skill in perfect harmony with the seasonal scenery through the glass windows, such as fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and snowy landscapes, and is beautiful beyond words.

Seisen-en is also known as one of the best gardens in Okutsugaru, consisting of three types of gardens: the Oishi Bugaku style garden associated with the main building, the Karesansui (dry landscape) garden associated with the detached house, and the pond garden.
In addition, the entire Miyakoshi family residence is designated as a tangible cultural property and monument of the town. It is a place of great historical and artistic value.

When making a reservation, please purchase a reserved admission ticket in advance and take the designated “Miyakoshi Family Bound” shuttle bus.
Please take this rare opportunity, available only twice a year, to see the real thing right before you.
