Niogataki Fall

Nishimeya-mura NATURE

Niogataki is a 33-meter-high waterfall located in Nishimeya Village, Nakatsugaru County, Aomori Prefecture, and is characterized by its delicate, white silk-like water flow.

Visitors can walk up to the top and see the waterfall from the back side. Behind the waterfall is a natural cave where Fudoson, a deity of immortality, is enshrined. It is a space of mysterious silence that cannot be fully described in one word.

In winter, the waterfall freezes and becomes a single pillar of ice, known as the “ice fall. The ice usually begins to freeze in mid-February, and at night the waterfall is illuminated with fantastic lights.

On the third Sunday of February, the “Nyuhogataki Ice Festival” is held, in which a “fortune-telling” ritual is held to predict the year’s harvest according to the thickness and shape of the ice pillar, and a fire-walking ceremony is held. The area surrounding the waterfall is surrounded by large cedar trees over 300 years old, and visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature in each of the four seasons.

The area attracts many tourists, especially during the season of fresh greenery and autumn leaves. Please visit in conjunction with Shirakami Sanchi.
