Komoru Goshogawara

Goshogawara-shi HOTELS& ONSEN LOCAL ACTIVITY

A Stay for contemplation.

Komoru Goshogawara was born in July 2023 in Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture, known for Osamu Dazai’s birthplace and the summer Tachineputa,
Located in snowy Goshogawara, the inn offers a special space to face oneself in tranquillity.
It is a renovated 60-year-old old house with just five guest rooms, each with a different and atmospheric design. The grounds of the hotel cover an area of approximately 1000 m2, where guests can enjoy a tranquil stay in the midst of nature in all four seasons.

It is not just minimalism, but a thoughtful subtraction.
Richness and simplicity, functionality and beauty, modernity and classicism,
It is a hotel that reproduces the Japanese sense of beauty in the modern age, containing two contrasting values.

And food is one of the highlight.
Seasonal meals, such as rice cooked in a rice cooker and other seasonal dishes, such as Tsugaru wild boar hotpot or duck hotpot, are excellent, and are one of the reasons why many people return to this place.

Komoru Goshogawara was produced by Koda Ryohei, a native of Goshogawara.
He has a special attachment to his grandparents’ house, where he spent his childhood, and decided to revitalise it as an accommodation facility. He himself worked at the forefront of the creative industry in Tokyo, winning numerous awards. He used to come back to the house when he needed to get away from his daily routine and reset his mind during those busy days. This experience led to the creation of the concept of ‘komoru’.

In an interview, Koda said that he wants the hotel to be a place where visitors can face themselves and indulge in contemplation. He feels that spending time in nature, away from the daily grind, is a necessary luxury for modern people, and he wanted to offer this in the tranquil surroundings of Goshogawara, which is why he undertook this project.

One of the hotel’s unique features is its guest rooms, which incorporate karesansui (dry landscape garden). This reflects a design philosophy that places emphasis on inner contemplation rather than visible scenery. The Karesansui in the rooms creates a quiet and tranquil space, offering guests time to detach from the outside world and reflect on themselves.

The absence of special landmarks or landscapes is conversely an attraction of the hotel, allowing visitors to naturally concentrate on themselves.

There are, of course, no TVs in the rooms and no special activities. Instead, there are several old books and a writing desk so that guests can enjoy this time to their heart’s content. This is the essence of ‘Komoru’ and the new accommodation experience we are aiming for.
