Great Showa Buddha

Aomori-shi HISTORY

The Showa Daibutsu, located in Aomori City, is the largest seated bronze statue of the Great Buddha in Japan, standing 21.35 meters tall and weighing 220 tons, and is housed in Seiryuji Temple.

Built in 1984, the Daibutsu was created hoping for an era of peace and war.

The spacious grounds of Seiryuji Temple, which surrounds the Great Buddha, include a Karesansui (dry landscape) garden that reflects the changing scenery of the four seasons, creating a sense of serenity in harmony with the beauty of nature. The Karesansui masonry and sand patterns express the spirit of Zen, creating a calming space.

Visitors can also enter the interior of the Showa Daibutsu. A diagram of the six ways of reincarnation and a monument to the war dead are on display, creating a space where visitors can experience the teachings of Buddhism. There are also beautiful architectural structures, such as the five-story pagoda and Kondo Hall in the Seiryuji.

Daily Kannon Sutra and Goma prayers are also held, allowing visitors to spend a solemn time while experiencing the teachings of Buddhism. The Showa Daibutsu (Great Buddha) at Seiryuji Temple is many visitors’ favorite sightseeing spot in Aomori City.
