Sannai Maruyama Site

Aomori-shi HISTORY LOCAL ACTIVITY

The Sannai Maruyama Site, located in Aomori City, is one of Japan’s largest Jomon-era settlement sites and a World Heritage Site, which flourished approximately 5,500 to 4,000 years ago.

Since its excavation in 1992, numerous relics such as houses, large buildings and earthenware have been discovered, offering a glimpse of life and culture in the Jomon period. In particular, the reconstruction of a large dugout building is a symbolic demonstration of the technical capabilities of the time.

The Jomon developed an elaborate and complex spiritual culture, as can be seen in the clay figures, annular columns and Zhouzhi tombs. Jade Jewellery and Jomon pochettes are also displayed, showing that the people had a high sense of fashion.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the historical landscape of Aomori while learning how the Jomon people lived in harmony with nature. There is also a fun photo spot where visitors can be photographed wearing Jomon-style jackets.

The logo combines the land forms of Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku (Aomori, Iwate and Akita) to represent the distinctive Jomon pottery, symbolising the Jomon people’s artistry and harmony with nature, which is impressive design.
