The Seikan Tunnel, the world’s longest undersea tunnel, is an important road connecting Aomori Prefecture and Hokkaido.

It took 42 years from conception to penetration, with a total length of 53.85 km at a depth of 240 m below sea level. It was completed in 1988. The “Experience Tunnel” is also a must-see for railroad fans. Boarding the “Seikan Tunnel Tappi Shakkou Line Mogura-go,” a heavy door to the underground opens, and the steep incline takes you to 140 meters below sea level in just 7 minutes! In fact, this cable car is also the “Seikan Tunnel Tappi Shakkou Line,” the shortest private railway line in Japan. The cable car runs twice an hour and takes about 40 minutes, so it is recommended to check the schedule in advance.
