Hachinohe Art Museum
The Hachinohe City Art Museum, newly reopened in 2021, is more than just a museum.
It is a community space with the vision of shaping the Hachinohe of the future. It is a place where people can gather and learn from each other through art. The ‘Giant Room’ is a testament to this, where teachers and learners share the same space, making each other’s activities visible.
In addition to the exhibition space, a variety of areas can be used freely, including a terrace and a counter. Although there is no café attached to the building, visitors can enjoy food purchased at nearby restaurants only in designated areas within the building, creating a relaxing environment for visitors to spend their time.
In March 2024, the word “beauty” in “Hachinohe City Museum of Art” on the museum’s nameplate, installed on the wall of the museum’s outdoor plaza, was lost. One month later, as an emergency measure, Mr. Sato Shinya, the museum’s director and also an architect, created a replacement for the lost “Bi” using styrene board, which protected the “Bi” until May 15, when the nameplate was reinstalled. In response, the museum released the “Director’s Beauty” production kit in May for 330 yen for a limited time and in limited quantities. It is a beautiful episode that shows the playful management of the Hachinohe Museum of Art.
