Takayama Inari Shrine

Tsugaru-shi HISTORY

Takayama Inari Shrine, located in Tsugaru City, Aomori Prefecture, is dedicated to the gods of good harvest, prosperous business, and maritime safety. The shrine was founded between the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, when the Ando clan, a local powerful family, built San’o Shrine, which was transformed into an Inari Shrine during the Edo period (1603-1868).

The most distinctive feature of this shrine is the “Senbon-torii” (one thousand torii) that line the approach to the shrine. The magnificent sight of the vermilion-lacquered torii gates invites visitors into an extraordinary world, like a path connecting people with the gods. Among Japan’s Inari shrines, this torii stands out for its scale and is a popular spot for photographers and tourists alike. The view of the Sea of Japan from the shrine is also spectacular, offering beauty every season!
