Cape Tappi

Sotogahama-machi NATURE

This cape juts into the Tsugaru Straits, located at the northernmost tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula.

Surrounded on three sides by the sea—the Japan Sea to the west, the Tsugaru Straits to the north, and Mutsu Bay to the east—the cape is nicknamed “Cape of the Wind” because of its strong sea breezes.

At the tip of the cape is the symbol of the Tsugaru Straits, the white circular Tappisaki Lighthouse, selected as one of the 50 best lighthouses in Japan. On a clear day, the Matsumae Peninsula of Hokkaido and Mt. Hakodate can be seen across the Tsugaru Straits.

Nearby are the Stairway National Highway, a monument to Sayuri Ishikawa’s hit song “Tsugaru Kaikyo, Fuyu-kei” (Winter View of the Tsugaru Straits), the Seikan Tunnel Memorial Hall, and Ajisai Road. The area is best reached by car, but a shared cab ride from Kanita Station is available for 500 yen for those taking the train.

Tappi Misaki (straits) is also part of the Tsugaru National Park, which stretches from the northern Tsugaru Peninsula to the border with Akita Prefecture in the coastal region. Why not visit Shirakami-dake (Mt. Shirakami), the Twelve Lakes, including Aoike (Aoike), Bense Marsh, and Mt. Iwaki?
