Tsugaru Railway

Goshogawara-shi LOCAL ACTIVITY NATURE

Tsugaru Railway is a local railroad line that connects Goshogawara City in Aomori Prefecture to Tsugaru Nakasato Station, a distance of approximately 20.7 km, offering a 45-minute journey through the beautiful countryside of the Tsugaru Plain. Known for its unique seasonal trains, the “Stove Train” warms passengers with coal in winter, the “Wind Bell Train” is decorated with wind chimes in summer, and the “Suzumushi Train” is filled with chirping bell bugs in autumn, providing a unique experience for visitors.

The “Dazai Train” runs on June 19, Dazai Osamu’s birthday. A headmark reading “Dazai Train” is attached to the front of the train, and inside the train are paper mache reproductions of apples and water lilies that appear in Dazai’s works. A booklet printed from the Aozora Bunko (Blue Sky Library) of Dazai’s autobiographical novel “Tsugaru,” which describes his return to his hometown of Kanagi in his later years, is placed on each seat, and reading it on the Tsugaru Railway train is a magical experience as if you were stepping inside the work itself.

Among the seasonal projects, the stove train is particularly popular. Coal stoves are installed in the cars, allowing passengers to enjoy their journey in a warm atmosphere. The stove train also offers a nostalgic experience, with old-fashioned sights like “roasting Surume (dried squid) on the stove and drinking sake.”

Even during regular hours, the station staff provides explanations and handwritten maps. It broadcasts Tsugaru Shamisen music, which is just a few of the unique services overflowing with a sense of handmade hospitality.

The Tsugaru Railway is a train you should take at least once to enjoy the seasonal travel experience.
