Shiriyazaki Lighthouse

Higashidori-mura NATURE

Located at the easternmost tip of Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, Shiriyazaki Lighthouse is a white lighthouse that illuminates the boundary between the Tsugaru Straits and the Pacific Ocean.

It was built in 1876 as the first Western-style lighthouse in the Tohoku region, and it still plays a vital role in aiding ship navigation. The lighthouse is 33 meters high, making it the tallest brick lighthouse in Japan, and it is possible to climb inside.

Around the lighthouse, horses called “Kandachime” graze and can be seen in the rich natural scenery. These horses have been bred to endure the cold and work vigorously as farm horses.

Shiriyazaki has also been selected as one of the “50 best lighthouses in Japan” and a “lighthouse to fall in love with.” The place’s high historical and cultural significance makes it a popular tourist destination.
