Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art

Hirosaki-shi ART

Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art opened in 2020, renovating a historical building constructed as a sake brewery in the Meiji and Taisho periods.

The brick exterior has been renovated with a modern sensibility while maintaining its original appearance, creating a unique fusion of history and contemporary art.

Advanced contemporary art from Japan and abroad is on display inside the museum.

A to Z Memorial Dog, a large white dog sculpture by Nara Yoshitomo, a world-renowned artist from Hirosaki, is displayed at the entrance. The cute dog’s expression with closed eyes seems gentle, as if it is remembering something or praying. The white dog motif often appears in Nara Yoshitomo’s works. Please see it with the 8.5-meter-tall “Aomori Dog” at the Aomori Museum of Art.

The museum also has a library with art-related books and a café/restaurant called “BRICK,” where you can enjoy a menu using local ingredients. It is a popular place to relax after viewing art. Various art events and workshops are periodically held, so there’s always something new to discover each time you visit.
